Jon Favreau on Iron Man

May 25th, 2006 Posted in comics, movies, press | Comments Off

MTV talked to Iron Man director Jon Favreau, who gave some interesting quotes. Here are a few of them about the movie:

“It’s the first movie Marvel is self-financing,” he said of a new deal that frees the makers of the “Spider-Man” and “X-Men” movies from studio control. “We’re set to come out in the summer of ’08, and we’ll start shooting in January.”

“We’re gonna have it take place in the present day, but there will be an origin story that has the old, gray Iron Man suit; eventually it will progress into more of the modern look,” Favreau said. “That’s the fun of doing the first one.”

“The alcoholism doesn’t come into play until later on in the story of Iron Man,” he said. “[The comic] started off in the ’60s, where it was about him as a successful manufacturer who developed this suit. Then, later, it spins off into that story about him fighting against himself. I think we’re going to lay the groundwork for it, but the first one’s going to explore him taking on this alter ego of Iron Man, and developing the suit, and what happens politically within the Stark Corporation.”

Mentioning an eventual “Iron Man 2,” Favreau said that actor playing Tony Stark for his franchise is unlikely to be a major star (Tom Cruise was briefly attached to the role years ago). Instead, the director hopes to announce his discovery of a relative unknown from the Brandon Routh (“Superman Returns”) mold later this year.

American Idol Winner of 2006 is Taylor Hicks!

May 24th, 2006 Posted in press, tv | Comments Off

Congrats to Taylor Hicks for winning American Idol 2006!

We here at urbannerd.com are glad to one of the first to annouce that the American Idol winner is Taylor Hicks!

Taylor Hicks was born in Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. As an infant, he had blond hair. His hair color turned dark brown/black as an adolescent, and then grey as a young adult. He and his family moved to suburban Hoover when he was 8 years old. His parents divorced when he was 8, and his father Brad, a dentist, and stepmother Linda shared custody until he became of age. His half-brother, Sean, is a student at Georgia Tech and plays trumpet in the school’s jazz band.

Growing up in Hoover, Hicks played Little League baseball, golf, and varsity basketball. According to his grandmother Jonie, Hicks never had formal music lessons. He came running up to her when he was about twelve years old saying, “Grandma, you’ve got to hear this!” Then he sang Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness” for her. According to his father, when he was 5 years old he sang to random strangers the music of Kenny Rogers or Michael Jackson, to name a few. Hicks’ music reflects his favorites from that era: the classic songs of Redding, Sam Cooke, and Ray Charles. He plays guitar as well as blues harp and writes most of his own songs. [4] He bought a $2 harmonica at a local flea market when he was 16 and has been playing harmonica ever since.

Hicks was a former student of Berry High School and graduated from Hoover High School in 1995. He attended Auburn University majoring in business, communications and marketing for a year, lost interest and dropped out. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a music career and has worked with Nashville veterans Billy Earle McClelland and Percy Sledge. Later he graduated from University of Alabama at Birmingham. Hicks had a small following in the state of Alabama for his performances at dive nightclubs and other local venues. His trademark was Hawaiian shirts, and slacks that didn’t quite match. He released two independent albums, In Your Time (1997) and Under the Radar (2005), prior to appearing on Idol; the latter was made available at local music outlets in the Birmingham area. Hicks has also spoken on Tapestry, a radio program on National Public Radio affiliate WBHM in Birmingham, in December 2005.

Before Idol, Hicks worked at a shopping mall, the Riverchase Galleria, and dressed up as the Easter Bunny for Easter and spring promotions. After advancing to the final three contestants, Hicks returned to the mall for a short concert and promotional appearance before several thousand fans.

Hicks auditioned for American Idol in Las Vegas, Nevada. He originally wanted to try out in Memphis but the site was cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina. Also, he was touring in New Orleans with his band, the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, on the night Hurricane Katrina hit and was evacuated to Las Vegas. (USA Today, 5/19/2006) Hicks passed the audition by the approval of judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, but not Simon Cowell, who said that Hicks did not have enough of an Idol image for any of the judges to put him through the Hollywood rounds. In this Cowell was proven wrong, which he subsequently acknowledged.

Fans of Hicks have been dubbed the “Soul Patrol” [7]. Hicks frequently mentions the “Soul Patrol” after performances and in subsequent appearances by exclaiming “Soul Patrol! Soul Patrol! Soul Patrol!”. Hicks became the subject of two Weekend Update lampoons on NBC’s Saturday Night Live on April 15 and May 20, 2006, portrayed by cast member Jason Sudeikis. In the allusion of Hicks’ quirky tweeks and disposition, Sudeikis mocked playing Hicks’ trademark blues harmonica and repeatedly shouted out “Soul Patrol!”. Hicks, when interviewed by Ryan Seacrest on the subsequent episode of American Idol on April 18, 2006 as to whether or not he saw the imitation, admitted that he had and that the impression made him “fall out on the floor” with laughter.

On the May 10, 2006 results, Hicks was in the top 2 along with Elliott Yamin, and they made the Top 3 with Katharine McPhee. On May 12, Idol producers brought Hicks to Birmingham for a weekend of promotional events including television interviews for the local FOX affiliate, a downtown parade and mini-concert, another concert at the Riverchase Galleria, a mall in his hometown, an evening appearance at the Birmingham Museum of Art, and a campaign appearance with Governor Bob Riley and Mayor Bernard Kincaid. May 12 was proclaimed “Taylor Hicks Day” and Hicks was given the key to the city. On May 17, Hicks joined Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Carrie Underwood as the only Idol contestants who were never voted in the bottom 2 or 3.

New species of dinosaur named for Harry Potter dragon

May 24th, 2006 Posted in sci-fi, science | Comments Off

A NEW species of dinosaur has been named in honour of J. K. Rowling and her Harry Potter books.

The 66 million-year-old dragon-like monster has been given the title Dracorex hogwartsia because it resembles the kind of fantastical creature encountered by the teenage wizard.

The nearly complete skull of the previously unknown dinosaur was found by three friends during a fossil-collecting trip in South Dakota in the United States.

The dinosaur’s name comes from the Latin words Draco, meaning dragon, Rex, meaning king, and hogwartsia for the fictional Hogwarts School created by Rowling.

Stay after the Credits of Xmen3: The Last Stand

May 24th, 2006 Posted in comics, movies | Comments Off

We all know you will be lined up on Friday May 26th for what is supposedly, but not hopefully the last installment of the X-Men movie franchise (excluding the Wolverine, and Magneto spin-offs, and questionalby X-force, Excalibur… and many other possibilies) there is something you should know.

Before you leave your seats to throw away that empty tub of popcorn, and call your friends to tell them that Xmen 3: the Last Stand was AWESOME! Sit back down, watch through the credits and… If you don’t like spoilers, read no further

After the credits, we cut to a man laying on a hospital bed hooked up to machines. Moira Mactaggert is there tending to him and you assume it is Muir Island and starts typing on a computer, you can see the person in the foreground, and her typing. And a voice goes “Hello,Moria.” She seems startled, but the voice sounds farmilar almost like Charles. She looks at the comatose person and says “Charles”. Then shoot to black screen.

Check out the scene here.

Burk ‘Excited’ To Join Trek Film

May 24th, 2006 Posted in movies, nerd culture, sci-fi | Comments Off

(May 23 2006) – Bryan Burk, executive producer of “Lost,” will join the team led by “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams on the recently announced new Star Trek movie, Burk told SciFi Wire.

Burk will be on a team with “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof. Abrams will direct the 11th Trek film. Abrams’ long-time writing colleagues Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who co-wrote Abrams’ “Mission: Impossible III,” will also be involved.

“We’re all very excited,” Burk said.

Burk declined to discuss details of the movie. “We actually have this thing where we’re just not talking about it outside of us right now. And to say I’m excited is the understatement of the year. It’s going to be pretty great.”

Burk quashed rumors that the movie would center on Spock and Kirk’s first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their subsequent early adventures. “I can tell you that that article leaked out prematurely, so there’s no formal statement made from any of us, other than we all couldn’t be more excited about it,” he said.

When asked if Abrams’ longtime friend and frequent star Greg Grunberg would appear in the Trek movie, as either a Klingon or a member of the Federation. “First of all, there’s no way Greg Grunberg knows what the Federation is,” Burk said. But, he said: “When is Greg Grunberg not in a project that we do?”

The STRTrk called “functional” and “powerful”

Star Trek fans in Europe soon will have their very own communicators, er, Trek-themed cell phones. HTC announced that it will release its HTC Star Trek phone under its Qtek brand in Europe first, according to theunwired.net website.

The phone is a clamshell model that runs Windows Mobile Smartphone, communicates in short-range via Bluetooth and weighs only 99 grams with battery and touts a breath-taking 16mm with a build-in 1.3-megapixel camera and dedicated music control buttons.

The Qtek 8500 is not an ordinary clamshell phone only, the theunwired.net site said. It’s powered by Microsoft’s latest Windows Mobile 5.0 and running with a TI OMAP CPU at 200 MHz. It has 64 MB RAM and 64 MB ROM. The main 2.2-inch LCD with LED backlight provides crystal clear, crisp and vibrant image and colors. The secondary 1.2-inch LCD on the front cover keeps you always informed of the time and date, identity of callers and what music is playing.

“Our mission has always been to drive mass adoption of smart phone technology and we knew we needed something special to do that,” said Florian Seiche, European vice president of HTC. “The STRTrk will give smart phone enthusiasts the chance to turn heads; it’s not only packed with power and functionality, but it looks great and that’s what will drive the market. The style-ID is spot on and we’ve achieved the right balance between entertainment and business capability to give it the all important wide appeal that the next generation of smart phones need to deliver.

Texas on right road with 80 mph

May 24th, 2006 Posted in press, urban | Comments Off

I applaud Texas for considering raising the speed limit to 80 mph on certain stretches of highway (“Texas could accelerate to 80 mph,” News, Wednesday).

Apparently its transportation department officials did research and determined that 80 mph is appropriate for those sections of highway and, in fact, that 85% of drivers on those roads drive as if the speed limit were already 80 mph.

A criticism by some is that posting an 80 mph speed limit would result in most drivers going above 80 mph. While it may be true in the short term, the logic behind that prediction is flawed.

For many years, speed limits have been set artificially low. The majority of drivers clearly recognize this fact and drive at more appropriate, higher speeds. They take their chances and some are penalized by law enforcement. Other states would be well advised to take notice of what Texas is considering and set realistic speed limits, too.

Posting artificially low speed limits and then randomly enforcing them causes serious problems, including:

• Hindering the efficient flow of traffic.

• Increasing, not decreasing, the likelihood of accidents as a result of the speed differential between people driving realistic speeds vs. those who drive at the artificially low speed limits because they fear getting tickets.

• Making many otherwise law-abiding citizens criminals because they’re compelled to break the law by speeding.

I encourage vigorous enforcement of these more realistic speed limits so drivers would be discouraged from driving an extra 5 mph or more over the new limit, as many do now.

As for the fuel economy argument, the last I heard, we still have some freedoms here. We are still allowed to waste fuel if we want to – or need to – because we have to get somewhere as quickly as the law and common sense will permit.

If big SUVs or high-powered sports cars use too much gas, their drivers already pay a big penalty at the pumps.

Yes, driving more quickly will use more gas, but that should be our decision, and if we want to save fuel there are other options. For example, I drive a hybrid Toyota Prius most of the time.

Speed limits are finally starting to inch their way back to reality. We should think long and hard before we sit back and watch while certain of our well-meaning but misguided government officials try to legislate that freedom away.

Jan Wagner, San Diego – Slow down, think

Let me get this straight. We know that oil is not a renewable energy source, that gas prices will continue to rise, and that driving at a lower speed – say, 55 mph – saves fuel. Yet the Texas Department of Transportation is now considering raising the speed limit?

Husband, wife, child share same birthday

May 24th, 2006 Posted in weird news | Comments Off

SANTA MARIA, Calif. – A husband, wife and their first child beat enormous odds and share the same birthday. Evelin Alballat was introduced to Tony Osman several years ago by one of her relatives who learned they were both born on May 21. The couple married two years ago.

Their baby’s due date was May 20 and Alballat started having contractions around 10 p.m. that night. She was then admitted to Marian Medical Center.

“I kept staring at the clock and wanted it to turn past midnight before I delivered my baby,” she said.

Danny Osman entered the world about 12 hours later.

“We didn’t plan for it; it just happened,” Alballat said.

“We were just dumbfounded,” Osman added.

The chances of three family members sharing a birthday are .000751 percent, according to Paul Murphy, a mathematician and dean of academic affairs at Allan Hancock College.

Future birthdays will be a family celebration with one big cake and a vacation, Osman said. While the couple intends to have more children, they said they won’t aim for a fourth May 21 birth.

“We want to have one more, but we’ll just see what happens,” Osman said.
