Jun 28th, 2006 Posted in science, technology, weird news | Comments Off

The seven crew members of the space shuttle Discovery arrived at Kennedy Space Center on Tuesday to begin training for a spaceflight next month in which each will have a 1-in-100 chance of dying.

Those are the official odds that NASA has long given.

Exactly what the real odds are is a question that looms larger than normal this time.

Superman Returns, or maybe he shouldn’t have

Jun 28th, 2006 Posted in comics, movies, nerd culture | Comments Off

I went to the Superman Returns early showing last night @ 10:45pm. There was a lot of anticipation in the crowd standing before me waiting inline to get seats in the theater. No one was exactly sure what they were going to see. Would it be like the originals? Would the story continue, or would it be something new? Would this film be as good as Spiderman? Or suck as bad as Daredevil?

When the previews started I was surprised at the trailers being shown, they were not for that demographic at all… all with the exception of the Spiderman 3 trailer which looked soooo sweet. I don’t understand how they could put a trailer together while they are still filming, but it looked awesome no the less, and after the trailer everyone in the theater started hollowing and clapping.

The movie began with a short worded explanation of the timeline, what year it was, and that Superman had left and why. They used the original theme song and the same opening credits and the film started off ok. I do not want to give the movie away but I will make some points. I felt it dragged a little, there were long explanation gaps with Lex Luthor, and Clark Kent coming back to work at the Daily planet, but no one puts 2 and 2 together that when Clark returns so does “The Man of Steel”. Lois Lane has moved on and is very bitter, she is a mother now, but in the new tradition of Americans, not married. You find out why latter in the movie.

I found the movie visually stunning, which I expected, but the story lacked the plot and dialog of the originals. Though I have to say Bradon Routh really likes like Christopher Reeve in the movie. I would go see it again just to see if I missed anything. Overall the movie was good, but not great. I am sure fans of the franchise will enjoy it, and so will the younger generation that has never seen the originals.

Overall the movie was good. If I had a star or scoring system, I would give it a 2 3/4′s of something.

Don’t read any further unless you want to read a spoiler.

SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER: SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER: SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER: SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:

I will let you in on one spoiler… let’s just say Superman has been gone for 5 year, and according the legal system would owe Lois 5 years of back child support!

Twinkie Burritos? Twinkie Lasagna?

Jun 28th, 2006 Posted in weird news | Comments Off

CHICAGO (AP) – Twinkies, they’re not just for dessert anymore. The new “Twinkies Cookbook” has recipes for everything from a Twinkie Burrito to Twinkie Lasagna.

Theresa Cogswell compiled about 50 recipes for the book.

Many were submitted to Hostess, as part of Twinkies’ 75th anniversary celebration last year.

Cogswell tells Illinois’ Daily Southtown newspaper that one of her favorites is a berry-laden Patriotic Twinkie Pie.

It’s red, white and blue.

Cogswell says it makes a great centerpiece for a Fourth of July picnic, which you can also eat for dessert.

New Episodes of Futurama coming to Comdey Central!

Jun 23rd, 2006 Posted in cartoons, entertainment | Comments Off

June 22, 2006 — ‘FUTURAMA” is officially back from the dead.

The quirky animated show from “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening was canceled by Fox about two years ago, but will return with at least 13 new episodes on Comedy Central by 2008.

This is only the second time in television history that a show sent to TV’s trash heap has been resurrected. Curiously, the first was “Family Guy,” also an animated Fox show.

The tale of “Futurama’s” dramatic revival roughly follows that same path that “Family Guy” did.

In both cases, the shows have been successfully airing on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim late-night programming block. They both also turned into hot-selling DVD box sets.

“Family Guy” returned to Fox earlier this year, while last fall, Comedy Central outbid Adult Swim for the license to air all 52 episodes of “Futurama” and whatever new episodes might one day be produced.

MPAA illegally hacking

Jun 23rd, 2006 Posted in entertainment, movies, technology | Comments Off

A month after accusing the Motion Picture Association of America of conspiring to commit data theft, the operators of a file search engine presented more details regarding the alleged relationship between the MPAA and a man who admits hacking the small company’s network.

Valence Media, the parent company of Torrentspy.com, charges that the MPAA paid the Canadian resident $15,000 for information on Torrentspy and its executives, according to documents filed Thursday with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles.

“I contacted (the MPAA) and offered to provide it information regarding (Torrentspy.com founder) Justin Bunnell and Torrentspy,” according to a signed statement by Robert Anderson, the man identified elsewhere in the filing as a “hacker.”

Among the claims by Valence Media is that as part of its attempt to gather information on Torrentspy, the MPAA hired private investigators to comb the trash cans of Torrentspy executives. Valence Media obtained this information from Anderson, who for undisclosed reasons has agreed to help the company against the Hollywood industry group, according to copy of the suit obtained by CNET News.com. Valence Media has asked a judge to order the MPAA to turn over the information taken by Anderson and to identify anyone that the association may have shared it with.

This is the latest volley in a legal battle that began in February, when the MPAA sued Torrentspy and other directories that it accuses of contributing to the theft of copyright movies. Some file sharers use search engines, such as Torrentspy, to locate downloadable movies. The movie industry group has aggressively pursued those accused of distributing copyright material, as well as directories that the MPAA says are abetting piracy.

An MPAA spokeswoman did not immediately return phone calls, but the association issued a broad denial to Torrentspy’s initial charges.

It took Vincent Ferrari 15minutes to reach a live person… and then this:

CLOCK READOUT – 00:00

AOL REPRESENTATIVE: Hi this is John at AOL… how may I help you today?

VINCENT FERRARI: I wanted to cancel my account.

AOL: : Sorry to hear that. Let’s pull your account up here real quick. Can I have your name please?

VINCENT: Vincent Ferrari.

CLOCK READOUT – 00:30

AOL: : You’ve had this account for a long time.

VINCENT: Yup.

AOL: : Use this quite a bit. What was the cause of wanting to turn this off today?

VINCENT: I just don’t use it anymore.

AOL: : Do you have a high speed connection, like the DSL or cable?

VINCENT: Yup.

AOL: : How long have you had that…

VINCENT: Years…

AOL: : …the high speed?

VINCENT: …years.

AOL: : Well, actually I’m showing a lot of usage on this account.

VINCENT: Yeah, a long time, a long time ago, not recently…

CLOCK READOUT – 01:47

AOL: : Okay, I mean is there a problem with the software itself?

VINCENT: No. I just don’t use it, I don’t need it, I don’t want it. I just don’t need it anymore.

AOL: : Okay. So when you use this… I mean, use the computer, I’m saying, is that for business or for… for school?

VINCENT: Dude, what difference does it make. I don’t want the AOL account anymore. Can we please cancel it?

CLOCK READOUT – 02:21

AOL: : Last year was 545, last month was 545 hours of usage…

VINCENT: I don’t know how to make this any clearer, so I’m just gonna say it one last time. Cancel the account.

AOL: : Well explain to me what’s, why…

VINCENT: I’m not explaining anything to you. Cancel the account.

AOL: Well, what’s the matter man? We’re just, I’m just trying to help here.

VINCENT: You’re not helping me. You’re helping me…

AOL: I am trying to help.

VINCENT: Helping… listen, I called to cancel the account. Helping me would be canceling the account. Please help me and cancel the account.

AOL: No, it wouldn’t actually…

VINCENT: Cancel my account…

AOL: : Turning off your account…

VINCENT: …cancel the account…

AOL: : …would be the worst thing that…

VINCENT: …cancel the account.

CLOCK READOUT – 03:02

AOL: Okay, cause I’m just trying to figure out…

VINCENT: Cancel the account. I don’t know how to make this any clearer for you. Cancel the account. When I say cancel the account, I don’t mean help me figure out how to keep it, I mean cancel the account.

AOL: : Well, I’m sorry, I don’t know what anybody’s done to you Vincent because all I’m…

VINCENT: Will you please cancel the account.

CLOCK READOUT – 03:32

AOL: : Alright, some day when you calmed down you’re gonna realize that all I was trying to do was help you… and it was actually in your best interest to listen to me.

VINCENT: Wonderful, Okay.

CLOCK READOUT – 03:39

“I’ve never ever experienced anything like that,” Ferrari told CNBC.
