In the film, Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) is a blaster—a player who goes all out, all the time. But in his personal relationships, Huck plays it tight, expertly avoiding emotional commitments and long-term expectations. When Huck sets out to win the main event of the 2003 World Series of Poker—and the affections of Billie Offer (Drew Barrymore), a young singer from Bakersfield—there is one significant obstacle in his path: his father, L.C. Cheever (Robert Duvall), the poker legend who abandoned Huck’s mother years ago. As these two rivals progress toward a final showdown at the poker table, Huck learns that to win in the games of life and poker, he must try to play cards the way he has been living his life and live his life the way he has been playing cards.

Lucky You opens on September 8.

‘Star Trek’ Doohan Set for Space in October

HOLLYWOOD – Late Star Trek actor James Doohan’s ashes will be blasted into space in October, the company organizing the flight confirmed yesterday.

Doohan, who played the starship Enterprise’s chief engineer Scotty in the hit sci-fi series, was to have his remains launched last year but the mission was delayed to allow more tests on the rocket.

Now Houston-based commercial company Space Services confirm the launch will take place in October, along with the ashes of 100 other people, including astronaut Gordon Cooper.

A spokeswoman for the company, Susan Schonfeld, said thousands of mourners were expected to pay their final respects on the day, many dressed in Star Trek costumes.

She said, “Fan clubs from all over the world, including as far away as Africa, they’re ready.”

Doohan died last year at age 85.

Actress Angelina Jolie is in talks to join the cast of the sequel to the comic book movie “Sin City“.

Jolie’s co-stars in the film will be Rosario Dawson and Mickey Rourke and it was Dawson who slipped out the news at the Comic-Con book convention in California. But she did not go any further to reveal what part Jolie would be playing.

She said: “It’s all hush-hush but it may feature Angelina Jolie, it might be called ‘A Dame to Die For’ and it may be shooting at the beginning of next year.”

FANTASTIC FOUR 2

Jul 26th, 2006 Posted in comics, movies, nerd culture | Comments Off

On Friday, director Tim Story updated his MySpace blog (and a good thing he did it then, since the site was unpredictable all weekend), saying, “I am busy working away at all the concept art and most recently the design for Doom. I saw the maquette today of what the improved Doom will look like and he’s everything I’ve wanted him to be. Many have stated their disappointment with the lack of ‘evil’ ness in the last movie and I’d be lying if I said I was able to do everything I set out to do, but this time, there will be the plotting and the fighting and technology. He’s just as smart as Reed, or as he would say, smarter and I’m going to represent that in the movie big time. Julian is on board and wants to have just as much fun in making him ‘that villain’ we all know and love, or should I say hate. I’m wrestling right now with the cape issue and trying to have it but not let it get in the way of him fighting. He’s not going to just shoot beams of power this time. He goes toe to toe with a really big surprise. My 2nd Unit director Ej Forrester was showing me storyboards on a sequence we have in the movie that involves Doom, and we’re determined to have him blowing up shit! Wait until you see the mask! The armor! We also starting filming some video blogs today so there will be a time in the near future where I can start sharing concept art and other things. We’ll be opening up a website to post them and you’ll also be able to find them here.”

Story also dispelled rumors that the title had been chosen for the sequel.

Spider Man 3 panel @ San Deigo Comic Con

Jul 26th, 2006 Posted in comics, movies, nerd culture | Comments Off

Spider-Man 3‘s director, Sam Raimi, took the stage with producer Laura Ziskin. The crowd cheered for Raimi, recognizing him as a fanboy such as themselves. Raimi explained that they had just wrapped physical production on “Spider-Man 3″ two weeks ago, and he was hoping to have had footage to show. Then Raimi made Ziskin take the microphone to explain that the unfinished footage wasn’t really ready to be seen.

A collective “Awwwww…” could be heard throughout the convention hall. Raimi grinned and said, “Let’s show it anyway.”

The lights darkened and brand new footage for “Spider-Man 3″ came up and based on crowd reaction alone, it was unbelievable! A few shots were just rough computer-generated images, but even those showed promise. Sandman and Spidey battled it out in a couple of shots, including one involving a train. Harry Osborne looked very comfortable on his own Goblin-Glider, as he tossed bombs at Spider-Man. Both of the women in Spider-Man’s life – Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy – looked beautiful. And as seen in the first trailer released, Peter Parker’s “dark side” comes through in this film.

The final shot in the trailer – the one that had the crowd gasping and going wild – was the moment fans had been waiting for…Venom!

That’s right, after months of online rumors, it’s been confirmed – Venom is here, and he’s as frightful as he ever was in the comics.

MORE LOST THAN FOUND – “LOST” SEASON 3 PANEL

Jul 26th, 2006 Posted in nerd culture, tv | Comments Off

The “Lost: Season 3″ panel Saturday morning at Comic-Con International in San Diego was absolutely packed. Moderator Karen Idleson opened by asking, “Are you hungry?” Before launching into the first of the panel’s “video biscuits.”

“Lost Diaries” was the first clip, a preview of the mobile episodes (“mobisodes”) coming this fall from Verizon. In the clip, Hurley finds a video camera that still works, and shows it to Kate and Sawyer, just in case they’re killed, “or eaten or something.”

Next up were a few more surprises form the “Lost” Season 2 DVD bonus materials. There was a new Dharma Initiative training video, detailing the three phases of island work: Observation, Addition and Conclusion

The third clip was a montage of the cast and crew goofing off during the Hurley/Sawyer fight scene.

The last clip was “The Whole Truth,” cast members and crew talking about the Jin & Sun arc/relationship.
