Feige Says to Expect More Spider-Man Movies

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige recently told MTV that he thinks it’s almost certain there will be more Spidey films after Spider-Man 3:

Feige directly addressed rumors that it might be the final film for the friendly neighborhood web-slinger.

“There will be many more Spider-Man films to come,” he promised. “We already have stacks of ideas for the next one because of the wealth of stories in the comics. We could be making Spider-Man movies for the next 20 years, based on the 50 years of Spider-Man history we have.”

That doesn’t necessarily guarantee, however, that Tobey Maguire will continue as the man under the mask.

“When you’re concentrating on one movie at a time, there’s a beginning and a middle and an end to that process,” Feige reasoned. “We’ve been topping each one as they go, [and if that happens again], that’s the time for those discussions.”

Sumajin SEP-001 Sound Isolating Headphones

Aug 23rd, 2006 Posted in nerd culture, press, technology, toys | Comments Off

Sumajin’s sound isolating SEP-001 in-ear earphones block unwanted exterior noise from ruining your music listening experience. Unlike active noise canceling headphones, there’s no fancy destructive interference here, but more of a brute force, passive sound isolation thing going on. In any event, you can probably expect the SEP-001s to sound better than Apple’s stock earbuds, which I still see people wearing in the street. Why?

Sumajin’s including a few extras with its earphones, like a Smartwrap cable manager, airline adapter plug and a travel pouch. The earphones should sell for around $40.

Free SlingPlayer Mobile Software

Aug 23rd, 2006 Posted in nerd culture, press, technology, toys | Comments Off

Sling Media Inc., the makers of the Slingbox are giving away Slingplayer Mobile for Pocket PC or Windows Smartphone for any new Slingbox owners. All you have to do is purchase and register a Slingbox between August 15 and September 16 and you will get the SlingPlayer Mobile software package for free—a $30 value.

This deal is in conjunction with the recent release of SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Smartphone. This isn’t that great of a deal, the Slingbox itself will set you back $200, so what is another $30 so you can watch TV on your phone or PDA? It is good to see a finalized version of the SlingPlayer for Windows Smartphones, though.

Paramount Ends Relationship with Cruise

Variety confirmed today that Paramount Pictures is ending its 14-year relationship with Tom Cruise‘s production company, Cruise/Wagner Productions. Cruise and Paula Wagner will be exiting the studio as they forge ahead with plans to create an independently financed production company. Wagner told the trade that Cruise/Wagner is in discussions with several distributors to find a home for their films, which will be self-financed.

The move comes after months of speculation about the future of their Paramount-based company as the Aug. 31 expiration of their current contract approached. Negotiations said that talks were still underway as of a few days ago, however Paramount executives didn’t feel they could reach final terms they were comfortable with.

The current Paramount regime, led by chairman Brad Grey, was hoping to cut back on Cruise/Wagner’s overall deal, long known as one of the most expensive production pacts in town.

Viacom Inc
. (parent company of Paramount) Chairman Sumner Redstone told the Wall Street Journal that they were not renewing the deal because of his off-screen behavior. “As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal,” Redstone said. “His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount.”

On the flip side, however, Wagner said that setting up an independent production company “is a dream of Tom and mine.” She challenged Redstone’s assertion that Cruise’s behavior had cost the studio ticket sales, pointing out that the star’s movies have made the studio a huge amount of money.

Parker and Stone Making Two New Movies

South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have set two live-action films at Paramount.

Parker and Stone will first make the Jeff Roda-scripted high school comedy My All-American. They plan to follow with Giant Monsters Attack Japan!, a film scripted by J.F. Lawton (Under Siege) that will combine live-action with the “rubber suit” techniques made popular in Asian imports like Godzilla.

Parker will direct each film and Stone produce; both will work on the scripts with the writers. Sean Daniel and Nickelodeon will also be producers on “Giant Monsters.”

Parker and Stone are aiming for a 2007 production start, timed to a hiatus from “South Park,” which this week launched its 10th season.

My All-American will sport a young cast, marking the first time Parker and Stone have worked with real actors since the pre-”South Park” features Cannibal: The Musical! and Orgazmo

BlackBerry 8703e Pictures Leaked; Verizon Supporting GSM?

Aug 22nd, 2006 Posted in nerd culture, technology, toys | Comments Off

Sharp eyes have spotted the upcoming BlackBerry 8703e in the wild and the latest rumors point to a next week release date, August 28. There’s also rumblings of the device supporting GSM/EDGE for roaming purposes and support for CDMA-friednly Verizon’s high speed labor of love, EV-DO. The rumored inclusion of support for both CDMA and GSM is fairly important, since it gives people the flexibility to move to and fro without worrying if their smartphone will function properly, if at all, on the local network.

The fact that the 8703e hasn’t publicly received the FCC’s go-ahead is somewhat odd, but that could be chalked up to Verizon Wireless and RIM, maker of the BlackBerry, wanting to create an even bigger “ta-da!” when it’s actually released. Time will tell whether this is just careless conjecture or something more substantive.

UPDATE: What’s that saying, something like, if something seems too good to be true it probably is? Late word now indicates that the 8703e will not support GSM after all. So all that pretty text up there speaking highly of that capability? Ignore it, she’s CMDA-only. Rumors, fun to pass around until someone gets their head smashed into a locker. The follies of youth.
