GM Starting the Transformers Campaign Early

Oct 4th, 2006 Posted in cartoons, movies, press, sci-fi, toys | Comments Off

We all know by now that Bumblebee will be a Chevrolet Camaro instead of a VW Bug in the Transformers movie, while Ironhide is a GMC Top Kick C4500 4WD Crew Cab.

GM (which owns Chevrolet and GMC) is expected to have a big promo campaign to back-up the appearances of its vehicles in the movie, but they are already giving us a tease with a transforming Chevrolet Silverado on the 2007 model’s official website. The intro teaser takes a classic truck and transforms it into past models before getting to the new model (another hint about something in the movie!)

John Rogers on Transformers

Sep 22nd, 2006 Posted in cartoons, comics, movies, press, sci-fi | Comments Off

John Rogers, who wrote the first draft of the Transformers script, talked to Newsarama about the movie. Here’s a clip from the article:

Yep, I wrote the first draft. I’ve seen the shooting script, and it’s about half and half. They’ve moved one of the storylines a little earlier, and they’ve increased the big military aspect, whereas I had focused on some of the smaller, personal stories. Yeah, you know, I get a credit, we’ll see. We’ll see what it looks like eventually. It goes from me, to the other guys, who work quite extensively with Michael Bay, so using what he needs to get his vision across. The characters are the same, the rough plot’s the same, and I’ve seen the mock-ups of the battles and it’s gonna be frickin’ huge. It’ll be a lot of fun to see.
Transformers hits theaters on July 4.

Legion of Super Heroes on kids’ WB!

Sep 22nd, 2006 Posted in cartoons, press, tv | Comments Off

Miss Justice League Unlimited? Wish there were new episodes of Teen Titans on Cartoon Network?

You’re not alone. And you’re probably out of luck for any future installments of either of those shows.

But you’re not totally lost if you like watching DC Comics super-hero teams in animation.

One of DC’s venerable properties, the futuristic Legion of Super Heroes, debuts as an animated series on Kids’ WB! on at 10 a.m. on Saturday, the day the children’s network moves to Ch. 50 in Detroit.

The show is from Warner Bros. Animation and many of the same creators of Justice League and Teen Titans, including producer James Tucker, who counts himself among the followers of the long-running characters.

“Legion fans are the most devout, passionate,” said Tucker, who compared them to ever-faithful supporters of baseball’s Chicago Cubs.

Tucker and crew face the task of creating a show that will fit on Saturday morning and yet placate the throngs of die-hard Legion fans.

“Stylistically, we kind of found a middle ground between Teen Titans and Justice League,” said story editor Rob Hoegee. “Everyone from the crew’s side are huge fans of the book. It’s important for us to not only get it right, but always do something that people are going to enjoy.”

Don’t get stung by this up close and personal look at the yellow and black robot in disguise.

Here’s a close up look at Bumblebee from the upcoming Michael Bay-directed Transformers movie, courtesy of Ain’t It Cool News.

Meanwhile, fans report from the production site: “There were a ton of security guards walking around, but we tried to be sneaky and got some cool video of some street devastation. The video doesn’t do justice to what the special effects people did. We saw them set the whole thing up from bare street. They placed a bunch of black Styrofoam pieces around to look like a crater. Then they took a crane and placed some beat down cars on some metal braces to make it seem like they were blasted out of the craters. It looked absolutely amazing! The video gives you an idea about the size of the devastation. Toward the end of the video, you’ll see some footage of Bumble Bee Camaro and the Ratchet Truck.”

Parker and Stone Making Two New Movies

South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have set two live-action films at Paramount.

Parker and Stone will first make the Jeff Roda-scripted high school comedy My All-American. They plan to follow with Giant Monsters Attack Japan!, a film scripted by J.F. Lawton (Under Siege) that will combine live-action with the “rubber suit” techniques made popular in Asian imports like Godzilla.

Parker will direct each film and Stone produce; both will work on the scripts with the writers. Sean Daniel and Nickelodeon will also be producers on “Giant Monsters.”

Parker and Stone are aiming for a 2007 production start, timed to a hiatus from “South Park,” which this week launched its 10th season.

My All-American will sport a young cast, marking the first time Parker and Stone have worked with real actors since the pre-”South Park” features Cannibal: The Musical! and Orgazmo
