Odds of single vote deciding election: 1 in 60M

WASHINGTON (AP) — Voting for president and having your ballot be the deciding one cast – statistically, that is like trying to hit the lottery. The odds for the average person are 60 million to 1 against it, a study shows.

In some states, the odds of being the vote that tips the election to your candidate are much better. In others they are astronomically worse.

The study by three prominent statisticians used millions of computer runs of polling data to examine the likelihood that a single vote will carry a state and that that particular state will tip the balance in the Electoral College. The statisticians were trying to answer the question: “What is the probability your vote will make a difference?”

The answer is very low. You are far more likely to be hit twice by lightning.

Upcoming Summer Meetings

The Garden Society of Bayonne summer meetings will be held on Tuesday, July 15th, Tuesday, August 19th and Tuesday, September 16th at the Bayonne Public Library at 7pm. Use the side entrance on 31st Street (you will have to ring the buzzer). Signs will be posted. The agenda of the meetings will include recent  and upcoming field trips, seasonal plantings, updates on members projects and planning club activities. The Society is open to residents of Bayonne who have a passion or interest in gardening. New members are always welcome.

Upcoming Event – Butterfly Garden at Doris Duke Estate July & August 2008

Theer are 3 opportunities to view the Butterfly Gardens at the Doris Duke Estate in Mid July to early August. The trips are small number, so reservations are required and a butterfly expert will accompany each group during the 2 hour tour. It also gives an opportunity to see the gardens of the estate before the renovation reopens the farm for public tours in 2010. Project – Monarch Butterfly

The brianchild of one of our trustees who discovered the program while workign at the Liberty Science Center. This is an excellent family project as anyone who has witnesses swarms of butterflies in their garden can testify to. This foundation project is based at the University of Kansas. There is an exceleltn education component which would be approriate for a school or family project. In addition there is a way to register your garden as a monarch butterfly waystation and receive a designation plaque.

Project – Circle at Bayonne HS

2003-2007 Plan and execution by trustee WW, and science professor CR Rutkowski. Garden featured garnet and white colors, particularly geraniums. Originally created to honor a deceased teacher, it was then known as the circle at BHS. Original stonework contributed by Kenny Miczek and original carpentry by Steve Mihalenko. garden was featured on the photo stamps US Governement, and in 2005/2006 honored with a state award.
